Zero footprint

The AppGate USB Client is truly a zero footprint solution. It contains a full operating system, the AppGate Client, a web browser, an office suite, an email client, and many more applications necessary in the daily work routine - all on one single USB flash drive. With this suite of software, you are given the ability to securely log in to your organization’s AppGate Security Server and work as you would on any other computer, but without leaving a single trace after you leave the computer.

How?

The AppGate USB Client is bootable drive, which means that it does not rely on, or use, the ordinary operating system located on the host computer itself. It will launch in a secure and trusted environment that you carry with you whereever you go. In addition, it does not access or store any data on the local hard disks on the PC and will therefore not leave any traces or residues when the session to the AppGate server is closed.

Use-examples

There are many use cases for this client. When a user needs access to data or applications from an untrusted computer, this client is an ideal companion. The user will be assured that no traces of the session are stored on the system and it is not necessary to have to trust or rely on the computer being used. Examples include, but are not limited, to:

• Business people who need to access corporate information when travelling, for example from a customer’s computer.
• External consultants or contractors who want to use their own computers for access.
• Temporary project groups who need to access common resources from different computers around the world. USB clients can be distributed to them at the beginning of the project and be returned when it is completed.
• Medical doctors and other persons who need to access sensitive data from a home computer or any other untrusted computer. The alternative may be to travel to work to access the data, but this client guarantees that nothing will be stored locally on the computer when the user closes down the session.
• Home users who share computers with other persons at home and where the status of the computer is unknown. These computers can be trusted provided they use the AppGate USB client for the access. The client is designed to be used in all situations where it is important that the computer being used is free from spyware and infections and when it is important that no traces are left on the computer after the session has been closed.

Technical Details

The client system is based on a Linux distribution which executes entirely in RAM memory and never writes any data to the hard disks. It contains a firewall that protects the system from network attacks.

Almost all interaction with the operating system is removed from the desktop and user interaction is through the icons provided by the AppGate client. These icons and what local application to start when the user clicks an icon, is provided by the AppGate server. Customization of the user portal interface is therefore done centrally in the AppGate server and no configuration of the USB client is necessary.

The USB flash drive contains an encrypted partition on which application configuration files and possibly downloaded emails and other documents may be stored (provided the systems administrator makes these services available in the AppGate server). It is password protected and the user must provide the system with a password to unlock the partition when the system is started. Typical configuration information stored here is information about what server to connect to, browser settings and other configuration changes done by the user.
